Root Canals

One of the best options to treat a painful tooth is with a root canal.

Root canals get a bad reputation but at Oak Park Dental Studio we do everything in our power to put our patients at ease. We offer many different pain management options and oral sedation if necessary.

Root canals can save teeth that are severely decayed or infected, this is the first line of defense against the need for a tooth extraction.

Signs and symptoms you need a root canal

  • Sharp shooting spontaneous pain

  • Pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night

  • A toothache that worsens with pressure or eating

  • Recurring swelling of the gums

  • Tenderness in the gums or a little pimple appears on the gums

  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth

  • Extreme sensitivity to cold or heat

  • What to Expect

Some root canals can be completed in one visit. If extensive infection is present the root canal may be completed in two visits with interim medication placed between visit. The tooth and surrounding areas will completely and profoundly be anesthetized for the entire procedure. When a tooth requires a root canal, they can become brittle over time, we recommend a full coverage porcelain crown to protect the tooth from fracture.

After treatment, you may experience similar pain as you did prior to treatment for about two days. Please avoid chewing on this side of your mouth until the tenderness subsides. Take any pain medications or antibiotics as prescribed. You will then return for your final crown restoration after about two weeks.
